First and foremost, we should probably start with “What the heck is a pressure cooker?” When I first looked into purchasing one I questioned why I would need one if I already owned a Crockpot. Boy was I in for a treat 😂
Imagine a slow cooker on steroids and you have a pressure cooker!
As you can tell by the name, the pressure cooker uses pressure and water (liquid) to quickly and effectively cook food. There also have settings to slow cook if you’d like but the big take away with these is that it cooks things FAST.

Hands down the best pressure cooker has to be the Instant Pot. Even if you don’t cook or have never owned one, I’m sure you’ve heard of these. And that’s because they are the best.
The Instant Pot is technically a “multi-cooker” which means it has a bunch of settings to cook a multitude of things. It is said that the InstantPot can replace up to SEVEN appliances.
It can act as a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, sauté pan, yogurt maker and warmer 😱

I’m sure by now you are pretty interested in getting your very own Pressure Cooker.
But if you’re like me, you still nee some convincing. So here are some of the primary benefits of using a pressure cooker for your meals.

A common misconception is that through steam cooking, you are slowly reducing the nutrients, but this isn’t true at all. You can actually increase the nutrients you get from your food, since pressure cooking can help to retain more of the vitamins and minerals.
With pressure cooking, you aren’t rapidly cooking your produce and other foods just to get it done quickly. You are using a very small amount of water and letting the cooking get done gradually.

3 Tips to using a pressure cooker
These handy cookers are basically pots that use steam pressure to cook the food, as opposed to traditional boiling, baking, or frying.
They’re super-easy to use and can prove invaluable at helping you to stick to a healthy diet.
Here are some important tips to keep in mind if you not only want to use a pressure cooker, but also use it for healthy meals for your family.
1. use enough liquid
For pressure cooking, you need to use adequate amounts of liquid in order to get the right amount of steam. If you don’t, your food might burn, or it might not cook properly.
You don’t need as much liquid as other forms of cooking since you don’t have a lot of evaporation of the liquid, but you do still need some.
For most recipes, you’ll need about one cup of water or your preferred liquid (chicken stock for example).
Just make sure you don’t fill up more than the halfway mark of your pot with liquid. If you do, it can cause the pressure to build up too high.
You also don’t want to fill the entire pressure cooker with food, or this can also cause cooking inconsistencies.
2. Brown Beforehand
While pressure cooking does a great job at cooking your food slowly and efficiently over time, you don’t want to take any risks.
It works much better if the meat you are using has been cooked fully and browned beforehand.
This means any poultry, beef, or pork being used, needs to be fully cooked before you throw it in the pressure cooker. This should only take you a few minutes on the stove, so it is of minimal convenience.
BONUS: You can actually do this straight in your Instant Pot before pouring in the other ingredients.
Just add a small amount of oil to the pan, throw the meat in, and let it brown first. Remember to pour out the excess oil, add some water, veggies or other ingredients, then go ahead and cook like you normally would.
3. stop & go
Finally, don’t forget about using the stop and go method for cooking with a pressure cooker. Since most ingredients can have different cook times, you might want to put them in at different times.
As you read above, you will be starting with the meat, stopping the cooking process, then adding more ingredients and so on.
This might be the same for different types of other ingredients as well, such as pasta and rice that takes longer, or peas and green beans that tend to cook very quickly.
